FAQ
1. WHAT ARE THESE VIDEOS?
Over the fall 2023, we ran a video competition for the most compelling video demonstrating the error in the lower court case that gave us SuperPACs. These are among our favorite entries to that competition. The first three videos won the competition. The fourth is the most viewed (with millions of impressions already!)
2. WHAT WAS THE ERROR?
Well, watch the videos! Or watch the stem file from which the creators based their argument — a video one of our judges, the acclaimed actor Jason Alexander called “rather mundane” (ouch!) — here.
3. WHAT IS THE PROMOTION NOW?
We now are experimenting with ways to promote videos related to all types of democracy reform. Any donation to this page will be used to promote this page. Any donation to one of the particular videos will be split between the creator and ads to promote the video.
4. WHY DO ONLY SOME VIDEOS GIVE THE “DONATE TO PROMOTE THIS VIDEO”?
The creators of these videos must opt in to our promoting their videos in this way. We’re hopeful eventually all will?
5. HOW MUCH CAN THE CREATORS GET PAID?
We don’t know, but we hope lots! Any donation made to their video will be split (after administrative costs) between them and our ad team. The ad team will use the money to buy ads that will promote the videos even more.
6. WHY ARE YOU DOING ANY OF THIS?
Great question! We are trying everything we can to spread understanding about the problems facing our democracy and how to address them. We believe that this way of promoting videos has the potential to vastly expand our reach and reward content creators in the process. Think of The Teddy Project, modeled on The Lincoln Project, but with Teddy Roosevelt — one of the most important early corruption fighters — as the ideal. We’re not certain yet whether this can work, but if it does, we hope to make this a big success!
7. DIDN’T YOU SAY SOMETHING ABOUT A PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD?
We did, but after feedback from participants, and after recognizing the extraordinary success Ostonox’s video achieved already, we had second thoughts.
